Locals and leaders of Kigando sub-county Kasambya county Mubende district are demanding accountability for the 28.9M Mawujjo Primary School rehabilitation fund.
On 18th July this year, in the 57-page document, Mubende District Chairman, Michael Muhereza Ntambi addressed a special meeting with district councillors, district experts, and the resident’s district commissioner to review the performance of the 2023/2024 financial year and urged councillors to review whether the items mentioned were made.
However, it has been revealed that Uganda shillings 28,970,298 that was meant for the renovation of buildings at Mawujjo Primary School in Kigando district, went through the hole.
The school was torn down by the torrential rains in 2021, and the district decided to take it over for help. It was included in the district budget but the leaders and locals were surprised after the state of the district affairs report saying it was done above expectation, yet it was last renovated in the financial year 2021/2022.
Rev Felix Tumanyane, chairperson of the school management committee, confirmed that despite discussions about the money, no renovation work has been carried out and called for the Anti-Corruption Unit to investigate the matter.
Mawujjo Tumanyane Yowasi the Local Council I chairperson, said the district leaders always affirmed that they received the funds for renovation, but no action has been taken.
The councilors Kisanja Vincent and Aisha Ayebale said they are also confused about what to do after the district revealed that the money was used for the renovation of the building and they want something to be done.
Mubende district Education Officer Asapha Kabunga said the district was renovating a building at the school which cost 41M million but it was not enough so they decided to add another 28 million to complete it which the leaders opposed.
The building in question has a sign indicating that it was constructed in the 2021/2022 financial year but officials assure them that the funds for its completion were used in the 2023/2024 financial year.
Mubende residents have repeatedly complained about the way the district officials handle taxpayer money, most recently the Anti-Corruption Unit arrested and taken officials to court for misappropriation of funds.
