MUBENDE: The residents of five villages in Kyenda Town Council in Buwekula South, Mubende district are cursing heavy rains and hailstorms that left their properties and food destroyed.
In villages of Lugala, Namirembe, Kirangwa, Kinoni, and others, potato orchards as well as bean fields were all destroyed leaving residents begging for help from their leaders in central government to help them with food and other basic needs to be able to feed their families.
“All the cassava I had planted were hit by the hailstorm and lost their leaves, hunger will kill us” one of the victims cried out.
Residents said it was not the first time their area had been affected by the hailstorm but that this time it was too much.
“I have a big family, I had planted my tomatoes and now they are all rotten, vegetables are rotten and my paw paw plus jackfruit are all rotten because of the hailstorm,” the tearful resident said.
The situation of confusion forced the charities from Dedan Foundation to reach out to the locals with 1000 kilos of flour to help the residents pass through this trauma.
“We reached the gardens of these people and saw that many things were damaged, we ordered the LCS Chairman to make a list for us and we got many affected. Now we have given some but we will come back to continue donating to the affected residents” Joshua Lutembesa of Dedan Foundation told Mubende Post.
Mubende is one of the most popular farming districts but equally every year farmers are affected by heavy rains but they say the govt rarely responds to their cries.
“We wrote letters, they reached the RDC’s office and they were sent to the prime minister’s office in the Department of Natural Disasters Preparedness but we are yet to get a response,” Komuhangi Yunia Councilor of Kaloonga at the district told Mubende Post.
