Heavy Rains Render Mubende Residents Homeless, House Roofs Were Ripped Off

MUBENDE: Residents in Gayaza Ward, South Division in Mubende Municipality are homeless after heavy rains ripped off their house roofs.

Over 20 houses were reportedly torn off their roofs by a cloudburst that hit three villages.

According to Hon Niwagaba Bruno councilor for the south division, Banana plantations were destroyed, House roofs collapsed and residents are begging for help to find their homes again.

“Residents’ houses have collapsed, banana plantations and all other food are on the ground, so we humbly ask whoever can help to come and our people,” Niwagaba told Mubende Post.

Plantations destroyed by heavy rains

According to our sources, residents have started to build a temporary house for the elderly man identified as Ddirisa Kizza who was one of the survivors when the roof of his house collapsed.

“We have decided to build a house for this man because he is sick and old. Now we have decided to build him a small house so that he can have somewhere to sleep,” One resident explained.

Kizza Ddirisa revealed to Mubende Post that he was in bed for two months battling diabetes—however, his story of how he escaped death reveals how God still wants him to live.

“It was starting to rain, I felt like going to the toilet because my leg is hurt I am not physically fit, when I got there it started raining heavily including a hailstorm, I wanted to go back in the house but I had nowhere to pass because of cloudburst, so I decided to wait for it to stop.

“I was still there and I saw one iron sheet leaving, and the others also went with the wind, I saw the house shaking and fall to the ground,” Kizza said.

Mr. Kizza added that he couldn’t recover anything in the house because of his unpleasant health leaving him to beg Charity Organizations or well-wishers to help him in this difficult situation because he has children to look after.

“I have 8 children. Now the villagers have always helped me relocate and decided to build me a temporary camp, but I still beg well-wishers to help me,” Mr. Kizza says.

Residents say this was not the first time they experienced this but this time it was out of their hands.

Councilor Ssenyonyi, the Deputy Speaker South Division said that some children cheated death in the house but are nursing minor injuries.

“As you can see the houses have collapsed, and the children have survived, but they need help. This is not the first time we experienced the same, lately, we wrote to the PM’s office, unfortunately, we didn’t get any response,” Ssenyonyi said.

Mubende Mayor, Engineer Innocent Sekiziyivu told Mubende Post that they have already informed the Prime Minister’s office so that they can come forward with a possible solution to the matter.
