MUBENDE: A mini survey around Mubende district schools by Mubende Post showed a low turn-up of learners as the third term commenced.
The turn-up on the opening day and Tuesday, students’ reporting was slightly low and was majorly attributed to the hard economic crisis that the parents are going through, making them unable to raise either all or half of the school fees, mostly in private schools.
The Head of Head Teachers for Mubende District Secondary Schools, Nyirabakunzi John, also the Principal of Kasenyi Secondary School expressed his regret over the low number of students appearing for the third term.
Mr Nyirabakunzi said that although the economic situation in Uganda is not good, this should not prevent parents from communicating with teachers to ensure that their children return to school.
“Some Government schools recorded low turn up compared to private schools that had registered at least 50% learners and 100% teachers,” Mr. John said.
According to Dr Joyce Kaducu, the state minister for primary education the 82-day third-term academic calendar will run up to December 06, 2024.
She says there will be no automatic promotion of students, no learner will progress to the next level unless worked hard, therefore appealing to parents and guardians to allow their children to report for classes as soon as possible.
