Mubende High Court Launches Video Conferencing System

MUBENDE: On Monday, September 23, 2024, the Mubende High Court launched a video conferencing system to improve the efficiency of court procedures by allowing witness statements and hearings to occur remotely.

The conference was presided over by the Principal Judge at Judicial, Dr. Flavian Zeija, and the high court caretaker for Mubende and Kiboga Justice Jameson Kalemani, who said that this launch represents a breakthrough in Uganda’s judicial system that reduces the need for inmates to be physically transported to courtrooms.

Chief magistrate for Mubende, Caroline Byakutaaga, noted that the newly implemented system will enable legal authorities to conduct hearings and gather evidence from witnesses located both within Uganda and outside Uganda.

“We had successful trials already conducted involving participants from the UK and Australia,’’ Nabisinde said.

She added that this is crucial in addressing the backlog of cases that have plagued the Ugandan judicial system.

Justice Kalemani emphasized that integrating ICT solutions like this system is essential for improving access to justice and streamlining court operations.

He highlighted that it will increase cooperation that will foster better communication between various legal authorities, thereby enhancing collaboration in handling cases.

“The establishment of the video conferencing system was made possible through support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which shows the international cooperation in enhancing judicial processes in Uganda,” Justice Jameson noted.

The Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP, Ian King also said that on behalf of the UNDP in Uganda, it is an outstanding privilege to be part of the launch, as well as to participate in the Jinja Court Open Day.

“This System was set up with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP),’’ King added.

The launched event featured various judicial dignitaries, including chief magistrate Carolina Byakitaaga, and several Chief Magistrates, from other areas

Additionally, an Open Day event themed “A People-Centered Approach to Justice,” will encourage community engagement.

As part of this initiative, Principal Judge Zeija planted a tree on the court grounds, symbolizing growth and commitment to justice.
