MITYANA: Fishermen on Lake Wamala and their leaders are not satisfied with the Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) troops brought to the lake, saying the troops have imposed unfair strict rules and restrictions on fishing.

The fishermen were speaking at a meeting organized by their leaders at Lubajja Beach in Maanyi, Busujju, Mityana District to discuss how they can ease the new rules

In the meeting that was attended by Fishermen Leaders, FPU officials, and area MPs, Fishermen expressed their dissatisfaction with the strict rules imposed by the FPU.

Among the rules imposed on them are the use of, a 28-fit boat, known as Essimba, 4.5-inch nets, and among others.

However, fishermen say this is the most oppressive law since the 28-fit boat cannot be used on Lake Wamala because the lake bottom is clay and always attached by the bush every morning.

The fishermen have asked the FPU to extend the ultimate to six months.

The fishermen also expressed their dissatisfaction with the FPU troops for not having names on their uniforms. They asked the authorities to cooperate with the fishermen’s committees That have been managing fishing in the lake.

Major Frank Kanziira, who is in charge of Operations across the Lakes in the Fishers Protection Unit, referred their issues to MPs who passed the laws. He urged fishermen to abide by them

Lake Wamala which surrounds districts of Mityana, Gomba, and Kassanda, mainly produces Emale, Emamba, Ensonzi, among others.
