Enhancing Road Safety for School Children

The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, in collaboration with the Territorial Police of Wamala Region, has launched a road safety sensitisation campaign aimed at protecting school-going children from road crashes.

The campaign, which involves school administrators and children, focuses on educating young pedestrians on safe road usage practices.

According to Traffic Police Spokesperson Michael Kananura, the initiative comes in response to alarming statistics: in 2024 alone, 1,666 pedestrians lost their lives in road crashes, 702 of whom were children under 18.

“As responsible road users, we have a moral obligation to protect pedestrians, especially children, who are disproportionately vulnerable due to their small stature, limited visibility, and impulsive behavior,” Kananura stated.

He urged motorists, particularly motorcyclists, to exercise caution near schools and residential areas by reducing speed, adhering to speed limits, and remaining vigilant for child pedestrians.

He also called on parents and guardians to educate children on essential road safety practices and ensure they use proper restraints while traveling in vehicles.

Authorities hope that through collective efforts, including responsible driving and enhanced public awareness, the number of child-related road crashes will significantly decline.
