Mubende District Councilors Arrested in Kambuye Land Disputes 6 Years Later Demands for Justice, Writes to Museveni

A particularly devastating event occurred on October 9th, 2018, when the rest of the country celebrated National Independence Day, terrible cries echoed from Kambuye In Mubende district.

Innocent citizens in the area were subjected to severe destruction, with their property being destroyed and their livelihoods devastated. Coffee and matooke plantations were slashed, homes were demolished, and vital social infrastructures were reduced to rubble—without any form of compensation.

Former Kaweeri councilor, Mugwanga Ronald, together with Hon. Nantubiro Grace and 26 others, were unjustly imprisoned for over two years, and later released on the influence of the president of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s intervention.

Their detention, which spanned from November 2018 to January 2021, was a difficult and painful period for them, and it was only through the president’s timely and compassionate intervention that they were granted bail, providing them with partial peace after such an ordeal.

According to Honorable Mugwabya, these actions left deep scars on the affected individuals and families, violating Article 26 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, which guarantees the right to own property. It also stands in direct contradiction to the National Land Policy and Land Act (Cap. 227), which aims to protect the land rights of Ugandans.

“Such unjust and unlawful acts not only undermine the progress made through your poverty alleviation programs but also destabilize the communities who are working hard to improve their lives”. Mugwabya said.

“We are crying for justice and pleading for your Excellency’s intervention once again. We specifically pray for the Kambuye case to be settled immediately and justly. We urge your leadership to ensure that those responsible for these violations are held accountable, and that the victims are duly compensated for the damage to their property and the suffering they have endured”. He cried.

However, despite the positive strides made through the Programs of government led by President Museveni, these councilors, along with the people of Mubende and Uganda at large, remain deeply troubled by the persistent atrocities committed against innocent bibanja owners. These acts of violence, destruction, and injustice have caused immeasurable suffering and hardship to the affected communities.

In the letter seen by Mubende Post, these people have hope that with the President’s continued guidance, these issues will be addressed decisively.

“We trust in your unwavering commitment to justice, the rule of law, and the well-being of all Ugandans. We are confident that your intervention will restore peace and justice to the affected communities, and that land rights will be protected for all Ugandans.” Part of the letter reads.
