Ugandan Minister Orders Closer of Kassanda District leaders WhatsApp Group Over Misuse

Local Government Minister Raphael Magyezi has been forced to shut down the New Elected Readers Kassanda District WhatsApp group due to misuse.

During a day-long meeting at the district headquarters in the council chambers, the Minister was informed that one leader, whose name remains anonymous, had spread a message through a WhatsApp group of leaders and prevented councilors from attending the council meeting on May 30, 2021.

In a message, banning councilors from attending council meetings, saying they had spent five council meetings, including committee meetings, without being paid their allowances, and therefore could not pass the budget for another fiscal year, while they were still in debt.

“We cannot tolerate going ahead with the budget for next fiscal year without being paid the money we owe,” reads part of the message.

Meanwhile, many heard him and did not appear in the council, which was supposed to pass the 2025/2026 budget for Kassanda district and all the speaker had to do was to adjourn the council session till another date Which was impossible because the sessions permitted by the council rules were over for the business year.

This prompted one of the councilors to write to the Minister of Local Government, Raphael Magyezi, asking him to intervene in the matter after failing to pass the budget, as the councilors were angry over the non-payment.

The Minister also rushed and decided to meet all the leaders to hear their concerns, and ordered the immediate closure of the WhatsApp group for misuse, and ordered the district chairman, Kasirye Fred Zzimula, and the resident district commissioner of Kasanda to ensure that they implement the order
